AT&T has sent out a notice to developers that states Android users will be able to download apps from third-party application developers, including application store like Amazon's Application Store for Android. The new Samsung Infuse 4G will be the first Android devices to ship with the option for users to enable the downloading of third-party apps. "Over the next few weeks, we will also roll out this capability to existing devices in our base for which an upgrade is possible. Users will not need to take any action as their phone will receive the update automatically," read the statement. The process called "sideloading" would allow Android users to load third-party apps prior to this change, but it was not easy. The inability for AT&T users to download apps from third-party sources has been a point of contention with Android users on AT&T's network for some time now and appeared to come to a head in March when Amazon launched its application store. The new functionality will come in the form of a firmware update. A spokesman for AT&T confirmed that users will not need to take any action as their phone will receive the update automatically. The update provides the option for users to go into settings and allow third-party applications; if they do not change this feature, they will not be at risk from malicious third-party apps, according to a spokesman. Research completed by American Roamer show that AT&T Mobility is far and away the leader when it comes to the rollout of a 4G-branded radio access network for wireless internet access. American Roamer's maps show that AT&T's HSPA+ network covers a much greater area than T-Mobile's HSPA+ network, Verizon Wireless' LTE network or Clearwire's WiMAX network. Compatible with the Infuse 4G and other devices on the Android 2.2 platform or better, AT&T has also launched a new, fun app called JustUs. The app combines both social media and text activity from five favorite contacts into an animated wallpaper, keeping users better connected with those that matter most. Customers can download the app for free in Android Market today. Quotes “The 4.5-inch screen on Infuse 4G is enhanced further with Samsung’s Super AMOLED Plus technology. Colors are rich and bright, even while outdoors in sunlight,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president, Devices, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “When you juxtapose that with the fact that it’s the thinnest 4G smartphone out there today, it’s an incredibly compelling choice for our customers.” “When you combine the powerful 1.2 GHz application processor with AT&T’s advanced 4G network, this device will truly be the fastest smartphone Samsung has ever created with AT&T,” said Omar Khan, chief technology officer & chief product officer for Samsung Mobile. “The Infuse 4G is our latest example of Samsung’s global leadership in Android platform smartphones. With every Android smartphone that we launch, we’re bringing something new and exciting to the market.” Smartphone Portfolio AT&T is a pioneer in smartphones and devices and expects to widen its portfolio in 2011. In January, AT&T committed to introducing 20 4G devices and 12 additional Android devices by the end of the year. Purchase price of phone cannot be less than any manufacture or phone carrier's mail-in rebate, but you will still save if this happens. We will apply any unused phone discounts to the purchase of any phone accessories. See store for complete list of phones eligible for this sale. New two-year service agreement required. As of May 1st, 2011, One-Stop Communications will be offering products and services exclusively with AT&T Mobility. This change only applies to wireless phones. Our other products and services will remain the same. We have offered several different wireless services from different carriers from the beginning, but the industry has been pushing independent retailers such as ourselves toward exclusive dealerships for years. One of our longtime wireless providers was unwilling to continue a non-exclusive partnership. Faced with making a choice, we thoroughly reviewed the benefits to our customers and decided to become an exclusive AT&T Mobility Authorized Dealer. We feel passionate that AT&T Mobility is the right choice for our customers, and for good reasons. AT&T offers the largest network in the United States, serving 97% of the population. In Mifflin County, AT&T has more towers than any other carrier. Customers are able to keep their unused minutes with AT&T’s exclusive Rollover minutes. AT&T offers the largest selection of phones on the market. With AT&T’s unlimited text and mobile feature, customers can call any other wireless phone on any network for free. This change also opens the door for One-Stop Communications to offer the iPhone from Apple. Plus, we will be increasing the selection of all other messaging and smart phones available from AT&T. In the near future, you will also notice some significant changes to AT&T wireless Internet service as they upgrade and turn on 4G service in our area. |
