It cannot be denied that talking and texting on a wireless phone while driving is dangerous, and Pennsylvania legislators are one step closer to making it illegal, too.

On January 26th, a bill was overwhelmingly approved in the House of Representatives to ban talking and texting while driving.  If it is approved in the Senate, the Governor has already agreed to sign the bill and make it law.  Currently, the bill imposes a $50 fine for violations, except those made in emergency situations.  The legislation does allow drivers to use hands-free devices to operate their phones, and GPS systems would also still be legal.

Three PA localities already have hands-free driving laws in place.  They are:  Conshohocken, Hilltown Township, and Lebanon.

One-Stop Communications highly recommends that drivers avoid distracted driving.

In today's world, recycling must become a way of life.  There is no question about it.  Recycling preserves and protects our resources for both ourselves and future generations.  Many municipalities are offering recycling services for common waste such as paper, plastic, cans, etc.  Sadly, however, the landfills in our nation are quickly filling up with electronic products, such as phones, batteries and computers.  Electronic devices are safe to use, but they do contain some environmentally sensitive material if they are not disposed of properly.
One-Stop Communications wants to remind you of several programs offered free of charges at locations in Lewistown and Newport.

Cellular/Wireless Phones
Just about any type of wireless phone can be dropped off at One-Stop Communications for recycling.  Some phones are refurbished and sent to other countries to be reused.  If the phone is obsolete, it will normally be disassembled to reclaim the metals and plastics contained in the phone.  If you have a newer model phone, it may still be worth a few dollars.  In this case, One-Stop Communications will give you cash back for your phone.

Rechargeable Batteries
One-Stop Communications has partnered with a national program called Call2Recycle that helps consumers conveniently recycle their used portable rechargeable batteries.

Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), and Small Sealed Lead* (Pb) batteries are commonly found in cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, cordless power toools, two-way radios, camcorders, remote control toys, digital cameras and a variety of other portable electronic products.

When a rechargeable battery can no longer hold a charge, it can and should be recycled.  Consumers can drop off their used rechargeable batteries free of charge at One-Stop Communications, and the items will be processed at a recycling facility.  Useful material will be reclaimed to make stainless steel products and new rechargeable batteries.
*Portable rechargeable batteries weighing less than 2lbs/1 Kg.

Computer Equipment
One-Stop Communications has partnered with Skills of Central PA to recycle computers, monitors and other computer related equipment.  Printers and Apple monitors, however, are not accepted at this time.
Computers can be dropped off at One-Stop Communications.  From there, they will be sent to Skills of Central PA, where hazardous material in the machines can be safely removed, and parts can be recycled.  Skills of Central PA promotes jobs for those with disabilities.

Corrugated Cardboard, Mixed Paper and Newspaper
One-Stop Communications has partnered with the Mifflin County Solid Waste Authority (MCSWA) to recycle corrugated cardboard, mixed paper and newspaper at their Lewistown location, located at 126 Electric Avenue.  The recycling bins are located in the stone parking lot behind the store, and can be accessed from the alley adjacent to Second Street.  The public is welcome to drop off their corrugated cardboard, mixed paper and newspaper in the recycling bins during business hours.

Help preserve our beautiful earth!!  Be sure to take advantage of the free recycling programs at One-Stop Communications.

With colder weather upon us, One-Stop Communications wants to remind you to put ICE in your phones.  ICE is the acronym for "In Case of Emergency."  Entering an ICE contact in a cellular phone allows emergency personnel to know who to call in an emergency situation.

Almost everyone carries a cellular phone. Having an ICE contact allows emergency personnel will know exactly who to contact.  The contact person should be someone who may know your medical history if you need help. This could be vital information in a life or death situation. ICE, therefore, could help save your life.

ICE is so simple that everyone should take a few minutes to ICE his or her cellular phones.  Simply enter a new contact in you cellular phone address book with the acronym ICE followed by the contact name (for example, “ICE – Mom” or “ICE – Sara”).  Save this entry in your contact list or address book.  Be sure to inform your ICE contact that you have selected them as an emergency contact.

If you would like assistance adding ICE to your cellular phones, we encouraged you to see the friendly representatives at One-Stop Communications.

NEWPORT, PA - One-Stop Communications of PA, Inc. was recently awarded
$2,174 through the Small Business Advantage Grant Program.  Launched by
Governor Rendell in July 2004, the grant program provides a 50-percent
match for equipment or processes to reduce energy consumption and promote
pollution prevention for Pennsylvania manufacturers and service providers.

One-Stop Communications is one of 48 Pennsylvania businesses that are
investing in energy efficiency.  "The high costs of electricity and fuel
are affecting all of us," said Governor Rendell. "From families to small
businesses to large corporations, these rising costs are making it harder
to stretch a budget or earn a profit, but there are steps that we can
take. These innovative firms recognize that and they are making the
investments necessary to use energy in a smarter fashion, which means
lower expenses and higher margins."

One-Stop Communications has matched the $2,174 grant to purchase and
install high-efficiency heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning
equipment with zone controls to conserve energy at their Newport location.
